The Wreck of the Gilda – A World War I Ship near Savudrija

The Gilda wreck is one of the older and more historically significant diving locations in the northern Adriatic. Located near Cape Savudrija, not far from the Slovenian border, it dates back to the First World War period.
Ship History
The Gilda was a cargo steamer built in 1881 at the Vulcan Werft shipyard in what is now Szczecin. She initially sailed under the name Italia before being acquired by the Trieste-based shipping company Austro Americana.
The vessel was approximately 63 meters long and served as a bulk carrier. During World War I, she played a vital logistical role in transporting raw materials across the Adriatic.
The Sinking
In June 1915, the Gilda departed from Trieste loaded with magnesite and equipment. She was sailing in a convoy toward the Kvarner Gulf when she struck a naval mine approximately 3.5 nautical miles northwest of Savudrija.
The explosion was incredibly violent, tearing off the bow section of the ship. The Gilda sank in about three minutes, yet miraculously there were no fatalities. The entire crew of 22 managed to escape via lifeboat, with only a few sustaining minor injuries.
Condition of the Wreck
Today, the wreck lies at a depth of 21–28 meters and is split into two distinct sections:
- The Bow
- The Main Hull
The two sections are located about 50 meters apart, a direct consequence of the massive mine explosion. Although the wreck is over 100 years old and significantly decayed, its 70-meter structure remains relatively recognizable.
Diving Highlights
The Gilda is a popular diving site today, primarily due to:
- The split structure: Exploring two separate wreckage sites in one area.
- Accessible depth: Situated within a range reachable by many recreational divers.
- Open sea location: Offering a “true” open-water diving experience.
The wreck is teeming with marine life—schools of fish, conger eels, crabs, and other species use the structure as a sanctuary. Because of its exposed position, conditions can be challenging (currents and variable visibility), making the dive most suitable for advanced divers.
Significance of the Wreck
The Gilda represents:
- One of the few WWI wrecks in this part of the Adriatic.
- Critical historical evidence of the dangers posed by naval mines during the war.
- A fascinating example of a wreck separated by an explosion.
- An artificial reef supporting a rich marine ecosystem.
